A text from Ian said game on around midday and just made it by 1pm ish. A
few sailors already out and the wind was up varying between F4/5. The usual
crew appeared to be having a good time with tide running out with wind so
definitely a bit bumpy.
Rigged a bargain buy from a guy in Chichester a 2014 North 7.8 E type, no
cams hooked to my favourite board 146L JP Pro ed excite ride, finned with a
50cm slalom fin. Intentions were for a straight beat to the docks, but with
the sail set light after a couple of beats, went overpowered badly, with no
control in the chop. Using the fantastic North shoks lever whilst laying in
the water cranked down an inch and was back in control. Def North sails are
much better than my old Neil Pryde Hellcats, for control. The North shoxs
suspension were working overtime taking the stings out of the bumps, making
it a easy beat to the pier. Waited for Colsey near the pier who agreed to
follow me to the docks, but as we set off he bombed off back to the
fludyers! at first I thought that was a trick to get me down wind (it
didn't work) but later he said he the wind increased and he was overpowered
on his slalom bd. I continued towards the docks but yep the wind was now
howling through a stiff F5 and with the sail on its max set decided to turn
back near the Martello. The idea was to do some GPS downwind runs back to
the Fludge, but the first downwind leg was a disaster, going way
overpowered as I went further broad the board flew over a wave and rammed
the nose in nearly breaking my ankles (foot straps too big at the back).
Had to have a breather on the beach to consider my options! The run was
24.6kts and as Squiz had almost 27kts, I had to try again. It was just too
dangerous to try in on the starbd tack going out, so stuck to going flat
out downwind on port hoping to hit the big speeds near the flat water close
to the beach. That didn't work as due to the offshore wind at the manor
flat water had no wind.
Tried on port hammering out to sea bearing out so much I was standing
almost upright, but this was so dangerous I jumped in on the gybe and with
only 25.25kts, a slight improvement, I abandoned the attempt and just
played games outrunning breakers and chop on a normal broad reach,
fantastic!! With no concern about keeping up wind there is no doubt
downwind between waves made light of the now big chop/wave at least chest
height out to sea.
Great session and on return everyone had packed up so called it a day.
Happy with my downwind gybes, which were all good, not so happy with
attempted tacks and upwind gybing, not tight enough.
